As federal and state support for equity-focused institutions began to contract in 2025, Meharry’s Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations faced a structural problem: Its grant-seeking practice relied on siloed efforts and manual workarounds, lacking a unified view of funding precisely when diversifying revenue mattered most. The obvious ask was a budgeted request for new software. Instead, the CFR Director and I built the case for Instrumentl as institutional infrastructure, tying a $25,000 request to cross-campus coordination, a centralized grant calendar, and a concrete first-year target of ten new opportunities identified and five competitive proposals submitted. Highlighting the College’s persistent inefficiencies and its approaching sesquicentennial anniversary, the proposal reframed a technology purchase as the shift from reactive to proactive fundraising—arguing that a school’s capacity to secure external funding is itself a form of resilience worth investing in. The Black College Fund awarded the request in full at $25,000, granting us a two-year, university-wide subscription.
