Twice a year since 2017, Meharry’s School of Dentistry opens its doors for Oral Health Day, delivering free care to uninsured and underserved Nashville residents who often arrive with problems long deferred by cost. When approaching the Memorial Foundation, the simplest move would be to describe a charity clinic. Instead, the event was framed as a direct-service intervention and a training ground where future dentists learn community-centered best practices, positioning the ask around measurable value and cost avoidance rather than goodwill alone. The narrative highlighted the past year’s impact: In a single Spring 2024 event, 400 patients received 1,441 procedures worth $182,280 in treatment, plus $127,532 in donated clinical time. It reframed a day of free care not as a one-time gift, but as a repeatable model for closing an access gap that emergency rooms otherwise absorb at far greater cost. The request secured $10,000 toward the August 2025 event.
